ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
One of baseball’s most successful clubs, the St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 World Series during their impressive history. Formed in 1892, the Cardinals joined the growing National League, which enabled them a chance to bring the top level of baseball to St. Louis. However, competing against the top pro teams in America was no easy feat, and the early years were hard and lean on the team, who also known as the Pefectos in the fledgling seasons.
But in the 1920s the fortunes of the Cardinals began to turn around. 1926 proved to be a pivotal year for the team, and saw them lift their first National League pennant. Players like Rogers Hornsby, Jesse Haines, and Grover Cleveland Alexander brought the first taste of success to St. Louis and even helped them win their first World Series, defeating Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees in 7 games!
The next decade was also filled with success that earned the Cardinals two more World Series, in 1931 and 1934. Featuring heroes like Dizzy Dean, Johnny Mize, Ripper Collins, and Joe Medwick, the team became referred to as “The Gashouse Gang”.
The 1940s would become a golden era for the club, which began to see the fruits of an expansive farm system. Guys like Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter would become household names (and Hall of Famers) as the Cards won the World Series in 1942, 1944, and 1946.
Although the Cardinals would remain competitive following that success, it would be nearly another 20 years before another World Series championship came to St. Louis. But with such a stable and smart club, such a title was just a matter of time.
The St. Louis Cardinals of the 1960s were led by Lou Brock, Ken Boyer, and incredible pitcher Bob Gibson. After a World Series win in 1964, the team managed the feat again in 1967 behind record-breaking pitching. Gibson’s 1.12 ERA won an MVP Award and a Cy Young award, while the staff’s total ERA of 2.49 was best in the big leagues!
The following decade of the 70s was a bit of a dry spell with the club, but in 1982 a miraculous run occurred. Led by guys like Ozzie Smith and Joaquin Andujar the Cardinals won another World Series prize, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in a series titled the “Suds Series” due to the towns’ famous beer brewing histories. While another period without glory commenced, we should note the incredible home run record set by Mark McGwire in 1998.
The club would return to their winning ways in the new millennium with a fine stadium to boot, known as Busch Stadium, which enables a fine view of the famous St. Louis Arch and the skyline of downtown.
The new home opened in 2006, and the Cardinals brought the World Series to it that year. Stars like Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, and Chris Carpenter had been knocking at the door for years and had finally achieved their dream of a championship.
In 2011 they repeated the feat in one of the most entertaining World Series of all time. Facing the Texas Rangers and behind runs late in Game 6 (on multiple occasions down to their last strike!), the Cardinals battled back and forced game 7, which they won in front of their home fans!
Looking ahead, the St. Louis Cardinals are a fine club built for repeated success. While they rarely harbor too many star players, they are a club that always performs to its best potential and plays the game the right way! Usually contenders for the playoffs each year, the Cardinals are among the top baseball clubs in America!
