SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The San Francisco 49ers are a professional football team based in San Francisco, California.  They are part of the West Division in the National Football Conference.  They were founded in 1946 as part of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and later joined the NFL in 1950 when the two leagues merged.  The team name "49ers" comes from the name given to the gold prospectors who arrived in Northern California around 1849 during the California Gold Rush.  The 49ers is the oldest professional sports team in the State of California.

The San Francisco 49ers are well known as having one of the best dynasties in the NFL and actually in all of American sports history.  The dynasty lasted from the 1980s to the early 1990s.  During this time, they won five Super Bowl Championships.  These teams were led by such greats as Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, and Steve Young.  They were led by Coach Bill Walsh.  For 16 straight seasons, the 49ers won 10 or more regular season games.

In regards to Super Bowl wins, the 49ers are currently in second with total wins (5) and are tied with the Dallas Cowboys.  Only the Pittsburgh Steelers have more wins at six.  The 49ers remain the only team in NFL history to appear in more than one Super Bowl without ever losing.
