ATLANTA BRAVES
One of the most famous and successful Major League Baseball teams is the Atlanta Braves. Always a competitive team and one that has garnered major interest throughout the Southeast region, the Braves have become one of the National League’s favorite teams and are perennial contenders for the World Series. Throughout the years, numerous Baseball Hall of Fame players have donned the Tomahawk jerseys and have shared many memorable moments in baseball history with this club!
Originally beginning as the Boston Red Stockings way back in 1871, the team went through several name changes before settling on the Braves in 1912. In 1914, the team won their first World Series in a year that seemed destined for failure. Although they were in last place through mid July, they went on an incredible hot streak and became the first team to sweep the Series!
In 1953, the Braves moved to Milwaukee and in 1957, the team would go on to win another championship led by Eddie Matthews and a young outfielder by the name of Hank Aaron, who was the National League MVP.
In 1966, the team moved to their current home of Atlanta. The fast-growing city was an ideal new market for baseball and the team has found great success in recent years. While they were an average team for the first few decades, there were still several incredible moments such as Aaron’s surpassing of Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974. By the 1990’s the Atlanta Braves had become a dominant force in the National League under the direction of their long-serving manager Bobby Cox. The coach helped to bring a great deal of talent to Georgia, including Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Greg Maddux. The resulting team became incredible, winning 14 consecutive NL East titles and reaching the World Series 5 times in the 90’s. Although most of those runs ended in heartbreak, the Braves would claim the 1995 World Series over the Cleveland Indians, 4 games to 1.
During the 2000’s, the Braves were an up and down team that battled numerous key injuries. Nevertheless, several players like catcher Brian McCann and outfielder Jeff Francoeur helped ensure that the team still reached the postseason on a regular basis. While their recent outings haven’t been too strong, the 2013 Atlanta Braves took home the NL East after acquiring new talent with brothers B.J. and Justin Upton.
Looking ahead to the future, the team has been discussing moving to a new stadium in 2016. It seems that Turner Field has begun to grow old and the team wants a brand new, state of the art facility to play in. With such a long and prestigious history, the Atlanta Braves are one of the nation’s favorite teams and have even been coined “America’s Team”. There is countless signed memorabilia and collectibles around from baseball players past and present who have been a part of this tremendous club! Having found new success this past year, expect the Atlanta Braves to be right back in the World Series equation in 2014 and beyond!
