Autographed NFL helmets come in two sizes, full-size and mini helmets. The full-size NFL helmets can either be an authentic ProLine helmet (just like the ones that the players wear) or they can be a replica helmet. The authentic ProLine helmets are the most expensive which obviously adds value to your autograph. Taking one of these full-size helmets to training camp or to a practice to obtain your autograph in person can be daunting due to the size.
The NFL mini helmets are easy to transport and can actually be worth more in the long run as collectors are more apt to purchase a mini helmet over a full-size helmet.
Most autographed helmets are signed with a fatter head Sharpie. These are very durable and they tend not to smudge as easily as other writing utensils. Thin head Sharpies are more likely to smudge so you would not want to use one of these if you are getting your autograph yourself. Autographed helmets are typically signed with either a black or a silver Sharpie. You would typically want to use a silver one on a dark helmet and a black one on a light colored helmet. However, the autograph signed with a wide tip silver Sharper typically brings a higher price if you ever want to sell your autographed NFL helmet.
Autographed helmets, especially the full-size helmets, occasionally have multiple autographs. NFL fans that attend practices or special events where they can get their own autograph, like to obtain multiple autographs on their helmet or collectible. If you do this, please keep in mind that by obtaining multiple autographs on one item, you may actually be causing your collectible to decrease in value. If a “lesser” important player’s autograph is on a collectible, along with a Hall of Fame athlete’s autograph, the collectible will not be as valuable as it would if it only had the Hall of Fame athlete’s autograph. If the helmet has multiple Hall of Fame autographs, then the helmet is worth more in value. If you want to maintain value of your collectible in case you decide to sell it in the future, try and only have one autograph on it.
As with any autographed collectible, autographed NFL helmets should not be handled regularly. They can be cleaned with a soft cloth by using the cloth lightly in removing dust. The best way to maintain the value while keeping your collectible out for everyone to see; is to enclose your autographed helmet in a UV-protected display case. This would keep not only dust and other debris off your autographed helmet, but it would mitigate the harmful UV rays that can cause the autograph to fade. We have a wide selection of UV-protected cases that can be engraved with your favorite NFL team logo and we have ones that have mirrors that surround the helmet creating a great viewing experience.
