The city of Atlanta, Georgia was granted an NHL franchises on June 25, 1997 and the team was called the Atlanta Thrashers. The Thrashers became the league’s 28th franchise when it began play during the 1999-2000 NHL season. The Atlanta Thrashers were assigned to the Southeast Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference.
During the 2006-07 season, the Atlanta Thrashers qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs. This was the Thrashers only playoff experience and they were swept in the first round by the New York Rangers.
The Atlanta Thrashers did not stay in Atlanta very long. They were actually the second NHL team the city had with the first one being the Atlanta Flames. Both the Thrashers and the Flames relocated to Canada. The Atlanta Flames had moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1980 and were renamed the Calgary Flames. The Atlanta Thrashers moved in 2011 to Winnipeg, Manitoba and were later renamed the Winnipeg Jets. This was the second incarnation of the Jets.
